Anise Biscotti

Anise Biscotti is another tasty version of this gourmet Italian cookie. These long, hard and brittle cookies are bursting with flavor. Dip in hot chocolate or coffee and they will melt in your mouth. Italian Biscotti are about as gourmet cookie as you can get. You see them in coffee shops everywhere. The best part is they are VERY EASY to make. Everyone will think you are a chef and see you as a cookie expert, little do they know just how simple it is to work with biscotti recipes.

Make a dozen or two and give 3 away at a time as gifts. Package in cellophane bags bought at your local cake decorating store or Michael's® and tie off with ribbon, slap on stickers, write a creative gift message and toss them in inexpensive coffee mugs bought at your local dollar store. Accompany the cookies with a bag of gourmet hot chocolate or coffee and you've got yourself several nice gifts for several people.

Anise Biscotti


  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine (softened)
  • 2 teaspoons anise seed (ground)
  • 2 teaspoons lemon zest
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt


  1. Heat oven to 350º.
  2. Beat sugar, butter, anise seed, lemon peel andeggs in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix withspoon.
  3. Stir in remaining ingredients. Divide dough in half. Shape eachhalf into rectangle, 10 × 3 inches, on ungreased cookie sheet.
  4. Bake about 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes outclean.
  5. Cool on cookie sheet 15 minutes. Cut crosswise into 1/2-inchslices. Turn slices cut sides down on cookie sheet.
  6. Bake about 15 minutes or until crisp and light brown.
  7. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.
