So what are the Best Cupcake Frosting Recipes for Christmas?

Here we are Christmas is right around the corner and many of you are ready to start work, or should I say “play”, who wants to work, on making some delicious Christmas cupcakes and cakes. And to help us today I have a special guest who is making a second appearance, Leigh Wyryha from, who will share some of her tips on how to make Christmas cupcakes and cakes, Christmas cupcake frosting, how long to store frosting and some of the best cupcake frosting techniques.

“Leigh welcome back, your previous tips on cupcake storage and delivery was a hit and of course we all loved your Christmas Bulb Cupcake recipe, and who wouldn’t love your cinnamon marshmallow frosting. So to play off of the first interview a bit we would like to know a little more on the best cupcake frosting and cupcake flavors for the holidays.”

Opening Question

DSCG: “Leigh, what is your favorite cupcake flavor? What about cake? What do you look forward to most for Christmas season baking?”

Leigh: Out of all the delicious cupcake flavors out there, Red Velvet has to be at the top of my favorite cupcake flavor list. For my favorite cake flavor you can't go wrong with a great chocolate cake. My grandma makes a chocolate cake with zucchini that's to die for, and now she makes it every Christmas for us. I would never think to put something like zucchini in chocolate cake but it seems to add so much moisture to the cake and you don't even taste the zucchini. It's magic!

When it comes to Christmas baking, I'm literally counting down the days, starting in September, until I can start creating all my delicious treats. You can ask almost anyone what they remember the most about Christmas growing up and they'll tell you "Christmas baking!" and I think this is why I love it so much, is because it brings me back to when I was a kid, baking cookies and cakes in the kitchen with my parents. It's such a wonderful tradition to pass on too. I think what I most look forward to is trying something different every year. Some people think I'm crazy but I'm always experimenting with new recipes and new ideas. This year, for instance, I'm trying out different fudge recipes and incorporating them into cupcakes - something I have never done before! So we'll see how that goes...

Frosting vs Icing

DSCG: “I would imagine that many people use the words “frosting” and “icing” interchangeably, but they’re not the same, are they?”

Leigh: “What is the difference between icing and frosting? What are the notable differences that someone can see or perhaps even taste? What are the main differences in ingredients?” Most people view icing and frosting as the same thing, and you will often see it being used in sentences as the same thing, but there is actually quite a big different between the two. Frosting is much thicker than icing and holds its shape better as well. Frosting is mainly used for piping borders, roses and edges around cakes. It doesn't dry hard and stays soft to the touch. Icing is much thinner than frosting and dries quite hard. It's best used on cookies and as decorations on cakes. Royal icing is a great example.

Best Cupcake Frosting and Icing Flavors

DSCG: “What is the best cupcake frosting or icing flavors for the holidays or perhaps most popular?”

Leigh: One of the most popular flavors I get asked for is eggnog and/or cinnamon. Eggnog frosting on a moist chocolate cake is delicious! You can even pair the two and have a cinnamon spice cake with eggnog buttercream frosting.

Best Cupcake Frosting for Christmas (Leigh's Favorite)

DSCG:“Do you have a favorite Christmas cupcake frosting or icing recipe to share with us today? Would this work on cakes too?”

One of my other favorite, and very popular, Christmas frostings is a mint cream cheese frosting and it's great for decorating cakes as well. Here is the recipe!

Mint Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 (2-pound) package powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract (optional- add green food coloring)

  1. Beat cream cheese and butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy.
  2. Gradually add sugar, beating at low speed until smooth.
  3. Add extract, beating until blended. (optional- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract can be substituted)

Best Cupcake Frosting and Cupcake Flavors Combination

DSCG:“What is the best cupcake frosting and cupcake recipe combination? And what cake flavors would this frosting go with best?”

Leigh: The mint cream cheese frosting would go best with a chocolate cake, gingerbread cake or even red velvet cake. If you use red velvet cake I would tint the cream cheese green for red and green Christmas cupcakes! Resources

Leigh: I certainly do! Click here for some delicious cake frostings and also some great cupcake recipes

Best Cupcake Frosting Techniques

DSCG:“Do you have any tips on how to spread frosting or icing onto the cupcakes and cakes?”

Leigh: When I'm frosting my cupcakes, depending on the design I want, I usually use a piping bag or plastic bag rather than trying to spread it with a knife. This method is much easier and also looks much nicer. When I'm frosting a cake I like to use a metal spatula that's been dipped in warm water to make the icing smooth and crisp around the edges. This takes away any ripples or bumps. Here's a link for frosting cupcake techniques and cakes too.

Frosting Shelf Life

DSCG: “How long does frosting last before you should throw it out?”

Leigh: This really depends on the type of frosting. Cream cheese icing should be refrigerated and lasts about week. If it's just sugar and water it can last more than week and if there are eggs or cream then I would suggest not longer than 3-4days. If you're using pre-packaged icing, which has a lot of preservatives, this can last for a few weeks in the fridge.

Frosting and Icing Storage

DSCG:How do you store frosting and icing? Have you ever frozen frosting or icing? If so how long should you freeze it?”

Leigh: I always store my frosting and icing in either air tight containers or in sealed bags, this way it always stays fresh when I need to use it. I freeze frosting and icing quite frequently and same goes for storing it in the freezer as the fridge.

Your Best Selling Holiday Cupcakes and Cakes

DSCG: “What are your best selling cupcake and cake flavors for the holidays? What frosting do most people like for the holidays?”

Leigh: My best selling holiday cupcakes are definitely red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing and chocolate cupcake with mint or candy cane icing. People are looking for something different around the holidays, especially if they're bringing it to a Christmas party, house party, etc... They want something that reflects Christmas time in the flavors they choose.
