Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Go nuts! Have fun! Whoever you give them to will feel awfully special since this is such a tasty, unique gift. Once you make a few batches word will spread, then you'll have a lot more friends and relatives asking you to make them feel special too. I hope that's a good thing.

  • 10 ounces Pretzel Rods (check bag for weight)
  • 12 ounces milk chocolate chips (or melting disks)
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (optional)
  • candy sprinkles (optional)
  • Miniature M&M's® (optional)
  • Mini Reese's pieces ® (optional)
  • chopped peanuts (optional)

  1. Melt milk chocolate chips in double boiler or in microwave (do at 1-minute intervals, stirring between each one).
  2. If you are using the white chocolate, wait until later before melting unless you can keep it over warm water.
  3. Dip each pretzel rod about 2/3 of the way up in chocolate.
  4. Lay on wax paper lined baking sheets, lining up the rods but leave a bit of space between them.
  5. Allow to set a little, but not completely dry (while waiting, make sure your white chocolate is ready).
  6. Dip a fork into the white chocolate and drizzle over the milk chocolate by gently swishing the fork back and forth over the rods but not touching them.
  7. Place your sprinkles or candies on a paper plate and roll each pretzel rod in desired topping (or just sprinkle on).
  8. Lay back on wax paper to set completely.
  9. Find a decorative mug or glass to put them in. Tie bow to handle if you use a mug.

White Chocolate Covered Pretzels

I love the rich taste of white chocolate. Maybe you could mix both a batch of dark chocolate and white chocolate covered pretzels to give to your sweetheart or to whoever that someone special is your're thinking about.

  • 6 (1 ounce) squares white chocolate
  • 1 (15 ounce) package mini twist pretzels
  • Candy sprinkles (optional)
  • Mini chocolate chips both white and dark (optional)
  • Any topping you want :)

  1. Melt white chocolate in the top of a double boiler, stirring constantly. (Or microwave method mentioned in first recipe.
  2. Dip pretzel halfway into the white chocolate, completely covering half of the pretzel. Roll in topping if desired, and lay on wax paper.
  3. Continue the process until all of the white chocolate is finished. Place in refrigerator for 15 minutes to harden. Store in airtight container.

TIP: For some extra fun use food coloring to make "blue" or "green" chocolate covered pretzels. Place some wax paper in a decorative box shortly after removing from fridge.

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Twists

Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Here's another alternative for chocolate covered pretzel twists. Again try different toppings. Have as much fun making them as they will eating them.

  • 1 package (12 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp shortening
  • 2 dozen large pretzel twists
  • Assorted sprinkles or small candies (optional)
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (optional)

  1. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil.
  2. Combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the shortening in a large microwave-safe bowl, and microwave until melted, stirring after every minute. (Or use double-boiler)
  3. If dipping pretzel rods, hold a rod by one end and dip it in the chocolate, leaving an inch or two uncovered. If you are dipping pretzel twists, drop the whole pretzel in the chocolate and submerge it slightly. Use a fork to pull the pretzel out of the chocolate. Shake the chocolate-dipped pretzels several times to remove excess chocolate, and place it on the prepared baking sheet. If you are using sprinkles or small candies, sprinkle them on when the chocolate is still wet. Repeat with remaining chocolate and pretzels.
  4. Place the pretzels in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to set the chocolate.
  5. If desired, melt the white chocolate and drizzle it over the pretzels for a decorative look. Briefly return the candy to the refrigerator to set the white chocolate before serving.

Make Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Here's a great pictorial guide on how to make decorative chocolate covered pretzels. I've decided to use pretzel rods since I think most in the package are uniform in size and the bag I chose didn't have any broken ones. I can't stress how easy this gourmet, deluxe homemade gift is to make. You do receive a sense of achievement when you make your first batch. There are so many combinations and variations from drizzling white chocolate on top to different toppings. And again you could even add food coloring to the white chocolate to change the visual affect of your gift.

Check it out below!

Semi-sweet Chocolate for Dipping and Toppings

Before you start on your homemade chocolate covered pretzels decide which types of chocolate and toppings you're going to use to create your ultimate "work of art". I picked out one of my personal favorite candy bar ingredients, toffee, but in the end decided not to use it, although I will definitely use it later. As you can see I have some white chocolate which I will drizzle on top of the semi-sweet chocolate once it has cooled and hardened.

Double Boiler for Melting Chocolate

I have chosen to use a double boiler for the semi-sweet chocolate and to use the microwave for the white chocolate drizzle. It is easier to gauge when to remove the top pot from the heat before it gets to hot and starts to harden than in the microwave. When using the microwave I like to intially heat the chocolate for a minute. Then I stir until it's almost completely smooth and then heat it up again for another 10-15 seconds before stirring to complete smoothness. WARNING: Keep a close eye on your chocolate so that it doesn't start boiling. If it gets too hot it could thicken then you will have to start over.

Covering the Pretzel Rods with Chocolate

I'm sure there are many ways in which to actually dip your chocolate covered pretzels, but this is the way I prefer. I take a narrow casserole dish, place the pretzel rods inside then pour the chocolate over. Since most of the proportions of my deluxe candy gifts will be small I don't have the luxury of filling a large pot with melted chocolate and simply dipping the rods in by one end.

Then I...

Spreading Melted Chocolate with Spoon

I spread the chocolate with a spoon to completely cover the pretzels. It's a similar method to how I do chocolate covered apples.

Decorative Chocolate Covered Pretzels Rods with Toppings

Then I place the completed chocolate covered pretzels on wax paper. I used different colored nonpareils and sprinkled them on top. Then I...

White Chocolate Drizzle on Chocolate Covered Pretzels Rods

I drizzle the melted white chocolate on top of the cooled dark chocolate and wait until both chocolates have cooled until...

Decorative Mug for Chocolate Covered Pretzels Rods

I place the finished chocolate covered pretzel rods in a decorative mug. Of course you would want to pack the rods in wax paper then in a plasic sealable bag for either drop off or delivery before they are actually placed inside the mug.

Again let your imagination run wild. There are many other accesories you could add to your finished pieces of art and many different styles of mugs. Have fun making that special someone feel special. And don't forget to choose a clever "Gift Message" to your gift.

TIP: If deliverying you'd better deliver either choose next day air or no later than 2-3 days and from a Monday or Tuesday since shipping over a weekend will prolong the delivery process. You will definitely need to package your chocolate covered pretzels securely on both the bottom and top of the box as well as add either dry ice or an ice pack. ALWAYS ask your local post office or courier for best advice as I am not an expect in package and delivery.
